Why it's All in the Visit...

Happy Tuesday everyone!!

I just finished my first class for the day and the week has definitely started off well!! It's been a stressful month, with midterms, getting back into the groove of the spring semester, adjusting to new classes and professors. One of the bright parts of my recent life, however, is getting the chance to meet many of the accepted SMC Class of 2016 via the Facebook page and Knight Chats :)

Today, my wonderful readers, I want to start the day off by telling you why it's all in the visit. Now, what do I mean by this saying? Well, I'm going to bring you back to May of 2009, my Junior year of high school...

(This is the part that we travel back in time hahahaha!!)

I was in my high school gym, walking up the blue and gold staircase (go GCA blue and gold cougars :) to receive my award from my principal, Sr. Carol. It was a vibrant purple folder with rich gold writing with the name "Saint Michael's College." I had just won the Book Award for Scholarship and Service and could not have been more excited!!

Except... I had never heard of Saint Michael's College, much less where it was.

When I opened the folder and read the lovely congratulations letter, I finally did find out more about this Saint Michael's College, including it's location. I think my exact words were:

17 year old Alex: "VERMONT!? WHAT!? That's like... a million years from New York. Umm... yeah, that isn't happening, ever. "

As the summer before my senior year of high school arrived, it was time to plan my college visits. I wasn't decided on where I wanted to visit, let alone whether I wanted to go away or stay close to home for college. I picked a wide variety of schools that I wanted to check out. My mother, being the wonderful person she is, mentioned that we should take a trip to Saint Michael's College.

You know what I said? "Ma, are you crazy??? We are not taking a 7 hr trip to Vermont. No. Nuh uh."

Well, you know that saying, "Mother knows best?" Well, yeah, she does :) So, we made the appointment for a tour and info session sometime in July. (This would be a good time to thank my dad for driving the 7 hours as well- so thanks Dad!!)

When we got off exit 15 on I-89, we immediately rushed to catch our tour, which we were slightly late for. I still remember Stephanie, our wonderful Hoehl receptionist, running after our tour guide so we could join the tour. It's funny, because even though none of the students were on campus, I still got the chance to take in what buildings I would be going to and from as a student each day.

After my tour, I knew SMC was a school I wanted to apply to. When I got my acceptance letter (which also was that same vibrant purple and gold as my Book Award) I literally jumped up and down, so excited that I got in to Saint Mike's!!!!

In my acceptance letter was a picture frame that said, "Picture Yourself Here." I realized later that this became the motto of picking the college that I would be spending the next four years at. I had to narrow which schools I liked the best and then re-visit them. I had to picture myself going to class every day, joining the different clubs offered, and even picture myself going to the cafeteria in my pajamas for Sunday brunch. I needed to be able to see the place I went to school as my second home, the place where I could grow as a leader, a friend, a students, and most of all as a person.

I know how it feels like to feel as if the world is on your shoulders because you can't decide where to go. I know it feels like to just want to already decide and be set on where you're going. I also know that if I hadn't taken the chance to re-visit my top schools, I wouldn't have been able to picture myself there.

When I went back to SMC on my second round of touring, it was a really cold and rainy day in April. Even the weather couldn't stop me from realizing this was the school for me. Having the chance to meet and ask questions of current students, talk to professors about course work, and even having lunch in Alliot, I got that feeling... that this was the place for me.

Saint Michael's College would become my second home!!

That, my wonderful readers, is why it is all in the visit. If you can somehow get to the schools that you really want to go to, then do it. So many colleges during this time offer open houses, academic days, or daily tours (mine is Tuesdays at 3pm :) where you can step into the shoes of a student and picture yourself there.

I can guarantee you... it will make all the difference :)

around what month do students typically choose housing in the spring for the fall semester?

Around March is when the lottery is done. Usually, you'll get your lottery number sometime before spring break and then the housing decisions are done in Alliot around the week you get back. However, as soon as you get back from winter break, Res Life will be having meetings concerning housing options, forms, and will provide you with a list of dates for when everything will happen :)

Where do you pick up parking permits? Can I pick them up when I get back to campus?

You just head over to Public Safety (yellow building across rt. 15- where Fire and Rescue is) and pick your permit up and absolutely, they'll definitely have your permit waiting for you there whenever you head over to pick it up :)

how is the food? what do you suggest for a meal plan?

The food is pretty good, and this is coming from a picky eater!! The meal plan is also unlimited, included in your board. It basically means you can go into Alliot (our main cafeteria) as many times as you want throughout the day and not get charged extra, which I absolutely love :) I think with the food, you learn to become creative because there are so many options- vegetarian/vegan, pizza, grill, international, salad bar, pasta bar, soft serve machine- you name it, we most likely have it. I would definitely suggest if you come on a visit to SMC to get a meal ticket and try out the food yourself!! I actually did it when I visited for an academic day tour and it was great to get the chance to see what meals would be like if I were a student at SMC :)

Two Decades...

Happy Monday everyone!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful start to the week and of course, an amazing start to 2012!! Today is a really special day for me, something I guess I've kind of been... apprehensive of the past couple of weeks.

It's my 20th birthday :)

Happy graduation day 2010!!

Do you guys remember when you were younger and just couldn't wait to be big kids? When you got all mad when your parents would say to you, "I'll tell you when you're older" or "You can do that when you're older." I remember feeling so cool when I turned 6 and could count my age on two hands instead of one. I remember I felt so much older when I reached 10 because I was turning a "double digit" age and could swear I was getting taller. At thirteen, I was officially a "cool" (I use that term loosely, because I was actually quite awkward and to this day, a proud little nerd :) teenager, ready to wear makeup, go to school dances, and have crushes on the cute boys that were in my class. In high school, I couldn't wait to turn 16 and get dressed up with my best friends to go to sweet 16 parties and get my permit. At 18, I couldn't wait to buy my princess dress and go dance the night away at prom and graduate from high school, then spend my summer trying to fit in as much fun as possible with my family and friends, and head off to a college that was just perfect for me in August.

Sometimes, when I'm busy with work or pulling all nighters studying for a big exam, I wish I was still a kid. I wish I could still have tea parties with my Barbies or just have to color a picture without going outside the lines for homework. I wish I could still have recess where I would have contests with my friends to see who could go the highest on the swings, have nap time on my favorite white and red blanket, or go on play dates with my classmates. Most of all, I wish that life were sometimes as simple as it was back then, when things were just black and white, without the gray of adolescence and young adulthood in between.

I know many of my readers who are going through or have gone through the college process know how much growing up is done, how nervous you can get, and how sometimes, even though you're excited for the changes you'll be going through, you don't know if you're ready yet. That's definitely how I was feeling these past couple of weeks about turning 20. I'm the big kid that I always wanted to be and getting out in the world, but I sometimes wish I could go back to that cute little kid in pigtails and not deal with all the stress.

Looking back on it all though, I wouldn't change a thing. Each year is a blessing to me. It's a time of change, it's a time of growth, and it's most definitely a time of learning. I have a family that has always loved and supported me. I have the best friends a girl could ever ask for. I've received an amazing education, tried to spread as many smiles and a helping hand as possible, and have gained so many experiences in these past years. I cannot wait for where the future takes me.

I'm definitely ready to be 20 :)

I've just been accepted to smcvt and I was wondering, for a psychology major, are there different tracks students can take, like a clinical track, or are all psych majors taking the same required classes?

There's actually a bit of both!! So, all Psych majors are required 4 classes- Gen Psych (with a 4 or a 5 on the AP Psych test though, you'll receive credit for the class and not have to take it) Research Methods I and II, and History and Issues your senior year. However, you also take many electives as well that fulfill your major requirements in fields or tracks such as clinical, cognitive, social, physiological, and developmental. For me, I've finished 3 of the 4 required classes and since I'm on a clinical/ developmental track, I tend to take more electives in those fields, such as Abnormal Psych, Child Development, and Adolescent Development. However, that doesn't mean I have to take only the classes in my desired field. This semester, I'm taking Behavioral Neuroscience because it interests me and also fulfills a lab requirement. The Psych major at SMC is awesome because it gives you a lot of space to do what you want with it and your advisers help you set up a plan as soon as you get to school :)

A Quick Christmas Wish...

Fun Before Finals...

Happy Thursday everyone!!

I hope you are all having a wonderful week!! At the moment, I'm actually still in bed watching reruns of my new favorite show, Roswell, on Hulu and snuggling with my cat, Whitey, before I go down for breakfast :) I'm back at home, having finished my fall semester on Friday, flying back to New York around 9pm.

To tell you the truth, it has been a stressful couple of weeks. As anyone who has ever taken finals knows, it's a bunch of studying, worrying, feeling like your head is going to explode, and for me, eating a lot of Goldfish (my favorite study snack- hey, everyone need one :) I think what has been wonderful is the amount of support each student receives, not only from their friends, but from their professors, directors of programs, and hey, even the lovely SMC custodians!!

Before finals start, however, there is a lot of stress relief offered by SMC, which for a worrywart like me, is truly a dream. The weekend before finals, SMC Res Life put on Stress Free night, where students can get massages, delicious food, henna tattoos, and receive little study bags full of highlighters, flash cards, and even a cute little stress relief quote :) That Friday, my friends, Kate, KK, Mike, and I went to see the annual Mike Check Christmas concert. Mike Check is our male acapella group on campus and literally one of the biggest acts on campus- a must for any SMC student is to go to one of their performances, they're amazing!!

On Saturday, I went out with the VITA team to Anna Lester, one of our SMC campus ministers and my SMC mom's home to bake cookies and relieve stress. My friends, Maura, Po (her real name is Katie, but her nickname is Pocahantas, Po for short, since she was that for Halloween :) Tracy, and Kate, were driven by none other than Mr. "Feliz Edmundites" himself, our friend, Jon. It was literally the funniest road trip of my life- I don't think any of us could stop laughing the whole trip there and even had a sing a long to Last Christmas by George Michael... oops I mean Wham, I think!! Once we got to Anna's we realized something...

Anna and her family lived in an actual log house. Totally like Abraham Lincoln, but a lot more high tech and with plumbing. Aka: coolest moment ever!!!!! I've always wanted to visit a log house!!!!

It was so cozy and nice and all wonderful things!! I met Anna's husband, Jeff and became bff's with Anna's sons, Andrew and Nathan, who are the cutest little things in the universe. We all baked fresh, homemade cookies and then went sledding on the hill by Anna's home. Okay, so... I wasn't very big into sledding as a kid. You might even say I didn't do it too often. What can I say, I'm not too adventurous with those things haha!! Anyway, so of course everyone ganged up on me during the last run (so called friends, pssh!!) so I of course succumbed to peer pressure (I can't say no to a 6 and 4 year old!!) and sledded down the hill. It was so nice that Po (love her so much!!) and little Andrew went with me down the hill. I'd like to re-enact this scene for you right now:

Looking back, I have to admit, it was really so much fun and I'm glad my friends made me do it. We said goodbye to Anna and her family, heading back to SMC to get ready for the comedian. The wonderful Student Association presents a comedian, free for students, each year, because hey, everyone needs a good laugh before finals!! Last year, we had Nick Cannon, and this year we had the Office's David Koechner. He was absolutely hysterical- a perfect way to end a great day :)

Even though I was so stressed during finals week (I'll talk about that in my next blogpost) I am just so lucky to go to a school which offers these amazing experiences to me. These little things meant so much to me and helped me relieve a lot of my stress before finals :)

I was going to end with a stress song that I absolutely adore, but I think I'm going to save that for my next blogpost. I'm actually going to leave you with my new favorite Foster the People song. My suitemates and I are absolutely obsessed with them, always having sing a longs to their songs in the car :)

Yayayayayay!! How absolutely exciting- congratulations!! Hahaha, well, out of the 9 schools that I applied to, SMC was the second one I heard back from. I applied for the Early Action II deadline (December 1st) so I heard back in late January. I was actually a bit stressed because I was going through midterms (as you know, Senior Year is definitely stressful :) My dad actually gave me my purple envelope and I was really nervous. When I found out I got in, I literally texted all of my friends and did a celebration dance all over my house. SMC was my first choice so I was so excited, like you, that I got into my dream school... and hey, I guess I'm living the dream now haha!! Aww, thank you for your compliment!! I really hope to see you as part of the SMC family in the fall- good luck with the rest of senior year :)

would you recommend using an ipad or laptop for taking notes in class, and other course work? because i have both, which would be easier and more funtional? thanks <3

Great question!! Okay, so it totally depends. First, I'd definitely recommend speaking to your professor before you bring in a laptop or Ipad- some professors are absolutely fine with it, some would rather you take notes via notebook or binder. Once that's cleared, I definitely see the benefits in both. Of my friends who have Ipad's, they actually have their textbooks downloaded into it as well, so it's great to not have to lug them to class. If you're quick on the touch screen, then I think that's a great choice. Me personally? I'd bring the laptop- even though it's definitely heavier than the Ipad, I'm a much quicker typist with the manual keyboard, so I can keep up with the Professor!! My advice is to definitely see what you feel more comfortable with- maybe try writing something and see which works more efficiently and quickly for you. Either or is a great option!! Good luck :)

Capture the Night- Last Knight Chat of the Year!!

Happy Monday everyone!!

I hope you're all having a wonderful day :) Today, while a bit gloomy and windy outside, was a terrific day!! I had my last research methods class ever (As you all know, this has been my toughest class for the past two semesters, so I'm excited to be doing well and finish up this part of my major requirements!!) and got all my homework done early tonight, so I had time to study for finals- overall a pretty successful night!!

I chose the title of my post today mainly because I want to remind all of my Class of 2016 readers that tomorrow, December 6th from 7:30-9pm, is the last Knight Chat of the year!! I really hope you all capture the night and log on to the Knight Chat tomorrow. It's really one of the best ways to have all your SMC questions answered my the terrific SMC Bloggers and meet some other high school seniors who are applying to Saint Mike's as well.

I still remember the Knight Chats I attended and they helped me so much in my decision to come to SMC. Talking to the bloggers and other seniors who were going through the same things as me- filling out the Common App, traveling to do college searches, sharing a love of SMC, etc definitely played a part in making me feel at ease during a stressful time.

alex, do you know any language majors? I'm really interested in majoring in Spanish, but is that common?

I actually live with two Spanish majors, one of which is a SMC blogger!! My friend, Taylor, is a Spanish and Elementary Ed. major and Kayley is a Spanish and French major. Being a language major or minor is popular at SMC, probably because we have such strong language departments with terrific professors. I've taken two semesters of Spanish myself and have loved it!! Breaking Dawn Day!! Love Affair Part 2...

Happy Thursday everyone!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful day :) Today, while it's a bit chilly outside, it's absolutely gorgeous in Vermont- the perfect way to start December!!

So, since my last long post about my love of Twilight, I wanted to lead my wonderful readers into my Breaking Dawn day!! It actually began 3 weeks ago, when 802theapp, a great app for anyone interested in anything that's going on in Vermont, tweeted about a contest that was especially for Twilight fanatics (they probably should of said "Aka Alex Byrne" haha!!) My best friend, Marci, tweeted the link to me, so of course, I just had to take it!!

To top it all off... 2 free tickets to see the midnight premiere in Williston. Umm... YES!!!!!!!

Even though there were some pretty tough questions in there, I was pretty sure I got all 6 correct. I made sure all of my suitemates played it too, just so we would have a great chance at winning. I was so anxious (my wonderful readers know what a worrywart I can be sometimes ;) and I could not wait to hear the next day when the results were revealed.

Finally, Thursday at 5 o'clock, Marci and I were walking back from the St. Edmund mass to grab dinner in Alliot, when... I GOT AN EMAIL FROM 802 THE APP SAYING I WON!!!!!!!!!! AAAAHHHHH!!!

It was sooo exciting!!! I jumped around, did my excited dance all around our usual table in Alliot (not too many people stared hahaha!!), and screamed.

IT WAS THE BEST DAY EVER!!

Plus, even better news- Megan won too!! So, on Thursday, Megan, Kayley, and I headed out to the Holiday Inn on Shelburne Road (2 exits away- Shelburne is 13 and SMC is 15 on I-89 :) to pick up our tickets. To top it all off, we got free t-shirts too and I have to say, there's nothing better than a free t-shirt!!

On Thursday night, Megan, Taylor, Kayley, and I all threw on our best Twilight clothing (actually, I had a scare because... I DIDN'T KNOW IF I HAD ANY TWILIGHT CLOTHING AT SCHOOL!!! The horror!! I did find a New Moon T-shirt I owned though, so all was well :) and at 10pm we headed out to the Majestic 10 Movie Theater in Williston (now, that's 3 exits away from SMC and has some of the best outlets for shopping!!)

Well, actually, we went to Walmart first to buy candy and soda. I know, I know, probably shouldn't have been sneaking that into the theater, but prices at the concession stand are so expensive and as a college student, you learn to live on a budget. It was the best though, because the Walmart is right near the movie theater. Our cashier was so kind and we got into a whole discussion about Breaking Dawn once she noticed my T-shirt- I love the people in Vermont :)

So, we got our tickets and headed into the theater, which was playing Twilight trivia. Of course, right as the movie was about to start, Kayley and Taylor went to the bathroom!! Megan and I began frantically texting them to get back, but thank goodness, they rushed back in just in time :)

Anyway, as an expert, the movie was pretty close to the book. Soundtrack was amazing (definitely recommend all the songs :) the wedding... sigh. A girls dream :) I will warn you that it is a bit gory at some points, so if your squeamish at blood, then run out 20 minutes before the movie ends. Oh and stay tuned after the credits- there is a special extra scene!!

It was an amazing night- as you all know from my last post, Twilight has been a part of my life for a long time, so getting the chance to find not only amazing friends at SMC, but also friends who love something that you love too is one of the best feelings in the world. My Love Affair With Twilight... Part I

Happy Sunday Everyone!!

I hope everyone has had an amazing Thanksgiving break!! I personally have been so happy to be home-getting the chance to relax, be with my family and pets, and seeing my best friends from home, it has definitely been a wonderful and much needed vacation :)

This month I was especially excited, mainly because Breaking Dawn Part I was coming out. If you guys didn't know already...

Hi, I'm Alex Byrne :) I am a Twilight Superfan.

Hahahaha, yes everyone, I have loved Twilight since I was 14 years old (wow... and I'll be 20 next month!!) That was before all the movies, Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn were even released and Twilight was relatively unheard of. I first discovered Twilight in the spring of my freshman year of high school, when a girl in my 11th period English class did her oral book report about it. I don't know what it was about what she was saying, but it sounded like a relatively good book, something I might want to check out.

So, when my Dad asked me what books I wanted for summer (yes, I am a book nerd and one of Barnes and Noble's best customers :) I just happened to remember that book that this girl had done her report on and wrote it on my list. When I started reading it one May night, at first I was like, "Ehh this is a slow book... I hope it gets a little better."

A couple of hours later (when I really should have been sleeping before heading out to school the next morning) I was still up reading it. I just could not put it down. When I had turned the last page and read the last sentence.

It felt... magical. Like a happy, amazing, wonderful feeling that could never be put into words :)

I know, so super cheesy, but it really did!! I was of course in love with the mysterious, handsome, loving Edward, thought I would be the perfect Bella (long dark brown hair, brown eyes... move over, Kristen Stewart, Stephenie Meyer was totally picturing me!!) have a best friend like Alice who was so bubbly and nice, and all those things combined... it just made me feel something that I had really never felt while reading a book before (except Harry Potter, of course :)

I read all the outtakes on Stephenie Meyer's website, constantly reread Twilight, and might have even stayed home sick one Friday just to read my new copy of New Moon (Mom and Dad, I hope you skip this part, I really did have allergies!!)

So, getting to the main part, when I was 16 years old, at the end of my Sophomore year of high school, I found out they were making a Twilight movie. I bet you could guess my reaction ;)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!! I' M SO EXCITED I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!

and then....

WHY DIDN'T THEY CAST ME!?!?!?!?!

After I got over that in reality, they wouldn't really ever cast me, true excitement took over. I had decided not to have a Sweet Sixteen, so I came up with the idea that I would have...

TWILIGHT DAY!!!!

So, that summer, believe me, I saved up. I got little jobs here and there on top of working overtime at my summer job as a counselor. I had also been saving a lot of money in case I did have a Sweet Sixteen, so some of that money went straight to my Twilight day savings.

Finally, when school started, I began telling my friends a little about my idea of a Twilight day and if they would like to come with me. Many of them had never read the book, but were excited to see it.

I bought pins, tickets, and shirts for 19 of my closest friends. We were going to walk to the movies Friday after school, take pictures, and then see Twilight!! It was a little tough, since many of my friends and I were going to a Sweet 16 for one of our classmates afterwards, but it was somehow all going to work out- I knew it :)

It did all work out and it truly was one of the best days ever. My day started off with my great friend, Marie and her family, giving me one of those 6 ft. cutouts of Edward Cullen- it was literally the cutest thing!! My friends and even my teachers, who I told all about Twilight day, were so supportive and constantly asking me how excited I was. My best friend, Jen, even made me a "Edward Cullen hyperventilation bag" just in case the site of Rob Pattinson was too much for me to handle (hahahahaha it still makes me laugh to this day :) Once we saw the movie, we got ready in the movie theater bathrooms and my mom drove 7 of us to the Sweet 16 down the road.

Overall, it was a priceless day that I will never forget :) While it was wonderful seeing the movie (even though I pick on it a lot when watching it now) it was the best feeling just bringing together a bunch of my friends, some who didn't even know each other, and bond over this experience together.

For every movie now, my friends and I try to get together to see it. It has become a tradition for us, one that reminds me just how lucky I am to have the friends I do. In my next blog post, I'll talk about my Breaking Dawn days and how lucky I was to start a new Twilight tradition with my amazing SMC friends :)

SMC Reslife isn't answering my Formspring questions - do you know if there's a storage students can rent to leave their furniture in during the summer break?

I actually know a lot of people who use storage facilities to store their furniture and things during the summer- one of them being Burlington Self Storage (http://www.burlingtonselfstorage.com/). I'm not actually sure if there is storage on campus, but I think your best bet to get in touch with Res Life to find out is to email them at residentialhousing@smcvt.edu or call at 802.654.2566 between 9am to 4pm Monday through Friday. You're so right- I am a huge Twilight fan!! Absolutely we do- we have a movie theater on College Street (right of Church Street) called the Roxy, where a bunch of my friends and I will go to, especially after a nice dinner at Bueno y Sano, my favorite place on College Street to eat :) While it is a small theater, I adore going there and everyone is so nice. There is also a multiplex in Williston and Essex, which are also options as well. For Breaking Dawn though, I know many of my SMC friends and I are getting together sometime this weekend in our Twilight gear to see it :) Hope you have an amazing Twilight weekend!!

There should be an email sent out by Grace Kelly soon about becoming an O-Leader. Basically, you have to apply to become one and then go to some info sessions for it before O- Leaders are decided. If you get chosen, you get to come up early for a week of prep before the first years come up :)

SMC Student Ambassador- Simply Amazing...

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful week so far!! To tell you the truth, Tuesday's are my busiest day. I have class from 8:10-11:20, VITA Team meeting, and my weekly tour at 12, followed by homework and studying. Sometimes, when I get back to my dorm, I simply just want to snuggle under my pink flowery comforter and take a nice long nap.

Sometimes, like a lot of students, I definitely have moments where I just wish I could stay in my warm pj's and sleep in or catch up on my favorite shows or movies, missing classes, activities, etc. Most of the time though, I remember just how lucky I am to have the opportunities that I do at SMC.

I think one of the biggest and proudest opportunities that I have at SMC is being a student ambassador. You may be thinking, "Uhh Alex... what exactly is a student ambassador?" because most likely, I would be thinking the same question too if I were in your shoes!!

Being a student ambassador means simply that I love my school- any opportunity I have to express and represent that love to others is truly such an amazing gift to me :)

As a student, I express my love of SMC through the amazing classes I take and the energy and effort I put into them each day, with professors who are so excited to teach and that take time to get to know me not as a number, but a name and personality. I get to spend my class time with terrific and enthusiastic classmates who I get to know and wave hi to when I walk past them, with big smiles on our faces.

As a friend, I have encountered some of the most amazing friends a girl could have on this campus. Being a part of such a warm, welcoming, respecting and accepting school family as SMC is, I have had the opportunity not just to meet unique and amazing people from diverse places, but to get to know them, bond over shared meals in Alliot together, attend sporting events with purple and gold outfits to show school spirit, but most of all, be there for each other and support one another during our college years and beyond.

As a member and leader of clubs such as VITA, Founders, and MOVE, I spread the love and support that my SMC family gives to me and incorporate it daily into the lives of others through helping activities such as weekly peer group programs, volunteering at the local nursing home and playing Kings in the Corner, or calling a student excited about learning more about SMC during Phone-a-thons. I get the chance to work with amazing directors such as the terrific SMC Admissions, Campus Ministry directors Anna Lester and Jay Moore, and MOVE directors Heidi St. Peter and Erin Bodin, who help me to grow every day as a leader and have been an amazing support since my first day at SMC.

As a SMC tour guide and blogger, I am truly honored to spend time with prospective students and families, giving them tips and information, but most of all, sharing the amazing experiences I have been given at SMC. Having the chance to make the difference and help prospective students during their college search is probably one of the best feeling's in the world and doing that through my shared experiences (hysterical, sad, excited, anxious- you name it, it's probably there :) on my blog and to around families touring the SMC campus is absolutely priceless!!

Yes, I am a student ambassador of Saint Michael's College, but it is so much more than that. It is the chance to touch the lives of others and to express just how lucky I am to be here. As I told my tour, and I will tell my wonderful readers today- I love SMC. My main goal in whatever I do as a student ambassador is to try to fully express that love and enthusiasm to others. Wherever you go and whatever school you may choose, I hope you love the place you spend your college years at as much as I love Saint Mike's :)

WAKE UP EARLY!! If you want your classes, that's really your best bet. Make yourself a cup of coffee or tea (anything with caffeine will do :) at 6:50 log in to Knight vision, keep clicking things so you don't get timed out, 7am on the dot hit submit and hope for the best. Who Doesn't Like Pumpkins? SMC Pumpkin Carving 2011

Happy Monday Everyone!!

First of all, this Monday would not be started correctly if I didn't wish my wonderful readers a very HAPPY HALLOWEEN!! I hope everyone is having a wonderful day, whether it be trick or treating later, eating lots of candy, going to a Halloween dance, or just dressing up in a great costume :)

Now, while you guys know about my wonderful dance experience, you know that Halloween festivities are not just on Halloween, but the weeks before as well!!

One of my favorite things about Halloween since I was a little girl was carving or painting a pumpkin with my family with funny and scary faces and then putting them in the front of my house for all the trick or treaters to see.

Since I am a distance away from home, I can't really do this anymore with my family (sorry Mom and Dad- miss you both!!) Thank goodness though I have a second home that allows me to still continue this tradition :)

Every year, VITA, which is our student run peer ministry group on campus and which I'm also a team member of, offers pumpkin carving each year for all students to get a chance to decorate their own pumpkins (no purchase necessary :) Last year, it was actually the first VITA event that I had ever gone to, which helped me meet people in VITA and eventually join. I was in charge of running it this year and since it was a really special event for me last year, I wanted to make it a really special event for others as well :)

So, at 4:30 on Friday, I set off with two of my trust helpers (and of course, best friends :) Megan and Kayley, to Eddie's, our student lounge on the second floor of Alliot. We brought up about 15 pumpkins (well... Kayley and Megan did- I kind of cheated and carried the light stuff like the apple cider, paints, and table cloths ;) We moved things around, my great friend and fellow VITA team member, Lauren, helped me put newspaper on the tables, and we were ready to go!!

While we did have a smaller turn out than expected, it really didn't matter to me- many of my friends came to carve pumpkins and we definitely had an amazing time :) Seeing everyone's scary, funny, beautiful pumpkins just made the event that much better!!

SMC Halloweekend 2011

Happy Sunday everyone!!

I am so exhausted right now, probably because I had such an amazing day yesterday. It was one of the best nights for all students at SMC- the annual Halloween dance!! This is probably SMC's biggest dance and one thing about SMC students- we all love to dress up!!

This year, my friends and I went all out with so many different costume ideas, decorations, and of course, tons of different candies going all around our suite. Friday, we spent our night preparing for the dance by having manicures, getting our costumes all set up, and watching Halloween movies like Nightmare Before Christmas and Halloweentown. On Saturday, all of us were literally in our common room for most of the day, just wishing it would be later on so we could start getting dressed in our costumes, take tons of pictures, and set off to Ross for the Halloween Dance!!

So, once 8pm hit, we all started prepping for the dance- let me tell you, our suite was definitely full of all the makeup and hair products you could think of!! Curling and straightening hair, tying bows, making sure masks were on right- you name it, we were doing it to help everyone get ready.

Finnnnalllyy at 10pm we were all ready for picture time and headed off to the dance. We met up with so many of our great friends there and danced the night away until about 1am. It was such an amazing time and I'm so glad that SMC throws events like these to celebrate something as fun as Halloween :)

So... what did I end up going as you might ask? Well, wonderful readers- I have a secret for you :) I actually dressed up as my alter ego. Can you guess what that may be? (Just look at the picture below :)

Hi!! Yes, there is definitely a lot of school spirit at SMC!! You'll always see someone around campus wearing their SMC clothing to events on campus, especially the sporting events. I know whenever I go to one of the games (usually volleyball, basketball, and rugby, but I always try to go to at least one of each team's games throughout the year) I'm always wearing my SMC t-shirt or sweatshirt with my purple and gold eyeshadow. The thing about Saint Mike's is the students love their school- it's our second home, so we always try top support our SMC family as much as possible :)

The Life of a Psych Major

Happy Saturday Everyone!!

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend :) I actually just came back from the MOVE Senior Citizen prom and it was another amazing year- let me tell you, senior citizens definitely give me a run for my money in the dancing department ;)

At the moment, I'm in my room trying to crank out my weekly Child Development journal. It just made me think, "Hey Alex, (ha- yes I do sometimes speak in the third person when talking to myself lol ;) talk to your wonderful readers about being a Psych major sometime soon."

So that's exactly what I'm going to do today!!

Choosing your major in general is such a big thing. Looking back to the end of my Junior year of high school, if you would've asked me what I wanted to major in, I probably would've have said something like, "Uhh... major? Hmm... yeah, I don't know, but I'll get back to you once I'm a Senior!!"

I think it was my friends who actually helped me decide to be a Psych major. I've always been the girl that everyone goes to when they're having a tough day and just wanted someone to listen to. One of my best friends always used to say I was a mini therapist, always there to help someone turn their frown into a smile.

I knew no matter what I wanted to help people. That's just all I've wanted to do since I was a kid. I wanted to make people feel better, whether it be giving them one of my Monsters Inc. band aids when someone had a cut on the playground or pretend to be a bunny (During my loose teeth face, my top front teeth looked like little bunny teeth hahaha :) and make a friend laugh after having a tough day.

While you can do this really with an major you choose, after much research, I chose Psychology. When looking at colleges, I spoke to professors in the Psych department, asking them things like, "Well, I know I want Psychology, but I don't know what exactly I want to do with it. Got any ideas?"

Well, SMC was just the perfect fit and the Psych program has been amazing for me :)

Withe the Psych program at SMC, you are really exposed to so many different types of Psychology. Cognitive, Clinical, Developmental- you name it we most likely have it!!

Me? I had no idea what ANY of these fields were. I know this may sound naive, but I thought once I had chose my major, that would be it- I was soooo confused!!

Well, two years later, I'm here to tell you, it's going to be okay :) With all majors, you will receive an adviser who will talk to you about what you're interested in and what you want to do with your major. You also meet with them every semester, one on one, to just talk about what classes you want to take next semester. My adviser, Ari, has been so wonderful and has helped me so much with picking what Psych courses to take every semester and keeping on track for my major.

So, to classes. There are many to choose from. In my year and a half at SMC, I've taken 7 Psych course, and hoping to take 3 more next semester, fingers crossed!!

For Psych majors, there are four required classes- Psych 101 (General Psychology) Research Methods I and II, and History and Issues your senior year. By the end of this semester, I'll be finished with 3 of these 4 requirements (yayayayay!!)

So, let me talk about the classes I've had so far:
Psych 101: Wow- it is something. It's everything you wanted to touch on in Psychology in one semester. To tell you the truth, I had no clue that Psychology was so in depth and broad!! It helped me to realize where I really wanted to focus my Psychology major on and prepared me for many electives I would take in the future. Usually, you meet three times a week- twice for a lecture and once for discussion. Psych 101 also qualifies as an LSR in organizational studies. This is a required course for any Psych major and minor.

Research Methods I and II: It's awful of me to say, but I have to be honest with my wonderful readers- Research Methods is definitely not my favorite part of being a Psych major. Research Methods is broken into two semesters- semester 1 is the statistics part of Psychology, semester 2 is actually putting on your own research and turning it into an experiment. Since I'm not a math girl, Research Methods I was a bit difficult for me. Thank goodness I had a terrific professor (shout out to Professor Richardson!!) and a lot of friends in the class who could help me to make sense of it all. Research Methods II, while tough, has been terrific- I actually just submitted my first research proposal on Thursday and I'm really excited to see how it turns out!!

Adolescent Development: My favorite course in Psychology so far. I think what made it so great was my Professor, Sue Kuntz. She was absolutely phenomenal and actually inspired me to focus my degree in Psychology by working with adolescents. In Adolescent Development, you really get to focus not only on biological topics such as puberty, but also on things such as relationships, cross cultural differences during adolescence, and a great deal of reflection on your experiences through out the teen years. What's terrific is that many of the upper level classes are opened to other majors as well, so I would highly recommend this course to both Psych majors and anyone interested in working with adolescents.

Child Development: Child Development is an absolutely terrific course and has taught me so much about young children in general. Professor Carrico, who also teaches my Research Methods II this semester, makes class really fun and interesting, which is extremely important, especially at 8:10 in the morning :) So far this semester we've learned about topics such as the development of language and linguistics, birth and newborn stages, and sensation and perception. A lot of Biology and Chemistry majors take this class as well as Psych majors and I would absolutely recommend this course for anyone interested in human development and children in general.

Behavioral Neuroscience: One of the two psych labs offered, I absolutely adore this class. Even if you're not a Psych major, you can take this as your lab requirement. Professor Tomasulo is the sweetest person ever and even though the material is a little difficult at first, she helps you out so much!! So far, I've gotten the chance to perform an EEG, touch a human brain and dissect a sheep brain, and can pretty much tell you the different locations and parts of the brain. It really is such a cool class and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in Physiological Psych!!

Abnormal Psych: For those of you interested in counseling in the future or maybe just interested in learning more about topics such as depression, Autism, PTSD, and Multiple Personality Disorder, then this is the class for you. Abnormal is a great introduction to the clinical side of Psychology and Professor Miller, who also has his own practice, provides us with real, hands on experiences.
I will definitely keep updating everyone on the classes I'm taking, not only for Psych, but in general because of the amazing liberal arts requirements that SMC offers. So, far I love being a Psych major and am so glad I chose it :)

Yes, SMC student led campus ministry group is called VITA, which stands for "Way of Life." I am one of the VITA team leaders, but also help run LINK which is our weekly large faith sharing group on campus, which meets on Wednesdays from 8-9. LINK focuses on reflection and relaxation, with the help of meditation and music. I'm also a lector and Eucharistic minister at the 7pm Mass as well. Saint Mike's is a dry campus except for the Townhouse area, where everyone is 21 and over and can legally drink. However, what is most important is that SMC expects its students to make their own choices and be responsible and respectful about them. To tell you the truth, there is so much to do on the weekends, from concerts at Higher Ground, to events thrown by Res Life in the dorms, the Grill from 11:30-1am, and to going into Burlington for a show, shopping, or a bite to eat, that if you are not into that scene, you will definitely find something that you're interested in :)

I love it!! While some students do commute, SMC is a residential college and 99% of the students do live on campus, so Res Life strives to make living on campus safe, cozy, and fun. Campus is absolutely gorgeous, intimate, and such a great place to grow that I couldn't imagine a better place to be living and learning at :)

Quick Brightening Moments...

Happy Wednesday everyone!!

Hahaha, I know, you're probably saying to yourself, "Uhh... Alex, you posted a pretty long blog yesterday, what more could you have to say?"

Well, I have amazing news everyone and I just had to tell my wonderful readers!!!!!!

So, do you remember me mentioning in yesterday's blog post about acting in my Medieval Europe class? I played the part of Agape, the lead sister in a Medieval play about womanly strength, defiance against men, and eventually martyrdom by the first woman playwright of the Middle Ages, Roswitha.

So, in the beginning of class, Professor Dameron, my teacher who I would 100% recommend a class with as a student at SMC, began his lecture stating that he always gives the two performers who demonstrated volunteerism and the most effort, male and female, a special prize.

Well... GUESS WHAT!?!?!?!

I GOT THE PRIZE FOR BEST FEMALE PERFORMANCE!!! AHHHHHHH!!

I was sooooo excited!! I mean, like I've said before, I am totally not an actress, but as you guys know, with anything I do, I always try to put 110% into it. I just could not believe it though!! I was so happy!! I received my favorite candy, Reeses pumpkin shaped Peanut Butter cup, as a prize and I saved it until the end of class, just so someone could take a picture of me and my prize!!

I know, it's just a small thing- it's no one million dollars or anything like that, but to me, the little things mean so much. I treasure those little moments where it feels like for a bit of time, that little thing can make you feel like the happiest, most proud person in the world. I love and strive to give those moments to people somehow every day, but it's always a treat to receive them as well!!

To those little things that make your day so much brighter :)

Find Your Own Star at SMC

Happy Tuesday Everyone!!

I hope you are all having a wonderful day!! As I write to you, I'm sitting in my common room doing homework, wearing typical college gear- my comfiest SMC sweatpants and my SMC VITA t-shirt. Can you tell I love my school? Hahaha :)

This week has been a great one so far- it seems like all of my friends have had birthdays this week, so it has definitely been a week of lots of happiness and gift giving, which I absolutely love :) Classes have been going great too- I got to act in my Medieval Europe class, which was absolutely hysterical, since I am no actress, but it was an awesome to tie in what we were learning in class into having some fun- definitely something you find with a lot of the classes you'll take in college!!

Tonight, I want to talk to all of my readers about something that I think is really important for any college student- being yourself.

I'm going to take you back to when I was a Senior in high school, reading my now friend, Gabbi's blog. She always stressed about being yourself in her blogs, but I never really got it. I mean, I'm always me!!

However, it wasn't until college that I understood what she was saying. Being yourself is something you deal with every day and let me tell you, sometimes it's just not easy. Those first couple of weeks during Freshman year where you just want to feel accepted and find a group of friends who seem to like you is so tempting, that you may just become someone your not.

Don't. It's not worth it.

We're all really unique and that's what makes being yourself so awesome- I mean hey, there's only one you!!

I'm going to go all cheesy on you and quote a bit of my 8th grade graduation speech- I think it's mainly because my Dad found my 8th grade lock yesterday and asked if I remembered the combo which of course I didn't, but back to the story:

Don't compromise yourself for others approval, but find your own star. I just love that quote. It goes back to my point about being unique. We each have qualities that make us, well, us. You should never feel like you have to change yourself in order for people to like you better. We really are star like in our own way and by being yourself, you will find those people who accept and love you for it.

Me? I always like to find in people what makes them so special and bring it out in them. I'm pretty much always smiling and always ready to give a hug or helping hand. I'm in love with my main clubs on campus, VITA, MOVE, and Founders. I'm really clumsy, a big nerd, love to sing as high as I can in the shower, and have a great laugh with friends about the silliest things. Some people may not like it, but that's okay. I'm simply just proud to be me and I know I have an amazing SMC family that likes me for me as well.

Being a part of such an accepting family at SMC, it's so easy to find your way to shine- just be confidant in who you are and I guarantee you'll definitely find people who want to know you too :)

I'm going to leave you guys with a song that I've been listening to on repeat all night while writing my LINK witness talk for tomorrow- it just reminds me of being yourself, especially around your great friends and your college community :)

So, like I mentioned in my last post, I'm definitely going to be putting up some blogs about what I've been doing lately, so stay tuned!!

Happy Saturday Everyone!!

First, I cannot say how sorry I am for not blogging in so long. While I love being back at SMC, as any student can tell you, getting back in the routine of things, with classes and homework, activities, and taking on new leadership rolls... I'm not going to sugarcoat it- it does get a bit stressful and this month just took a lot out of me.

Now that we're entering into October, I definitely am feeling so much better. I have to say it is mainly because of the amazing people at SMC. When picking colleges, I really wanted a warm community atmosphere with friendly people.

What I got at Saint Mike's was a family.

When I got back on August 24th for orientation, I didn't realize until I hugged many of my new and old friends just how much I loved being with them. Laughing with them or just having one of our hangouts was so amazing.

One of the main reasons I recommend visiting SMC is because who ever you meet, they'll most likely hold the door for you or give you a friendly smile on your way to your dorm. It's just such a friendly place to be.

Having friends who will yell your name across Alliot because it's the first time they've seen you all day, buy you a pink flower at the organic farm stand in front of the Chapel because your room is pink themed (shout out to my wonderful friend, Megan :) Professors and staff, always having their doors open to talk to them or just lay on their couch and eat M&Ms while you vent about the day (Thank you to the most amazing campus minister ever, Anna Lester :)

In general, this really is just the typical thing you find at SMC.

Tonight, my friends and I were really acting goofy and took funny pictures- I think we were all a little stressed from studying so much for the beginning of midterm season, so we did what we did best- make each other laugh :)

Being back at SMC is like having my warm snugly blanket back again- it's my second home, and I'm just so glad to be back with such wonderful, supportive people :)

I'm definitely going to write some blogs about what I've been up to this past month at SMC very soon, since my readers know what funny things I get myself into sometimes, so stay tuned!!

Ahh I love that you're asking me this!! Okay, VITA is campus ministry here at SMC. I'm one of the leaders of LINK, which is our large faith sharing group that meets Wednesdays at 8pm in the upper room of the chapel. It's really relaxed and comfortable- definitely a way to destress and have some reflective time. If you go to the 7pm mass tonight, I'll actually be talking about how to get involved with it. We LOVE having new members, so I'll definitely update the blog when we have a first meeting. Basically, just show up and we'd be SO happy to have you!! Yes, absolutely there is!! Monday through Saturday, you can take the CCTA bus, which is free with a swipe of your Knight card. Unfortunately, buses don't run on Sunday, but there are always taxi services you can get in contact with that the SMC switchboard will connect you to at 802-654-2000.

I actually just did get an email about it!! This is Res Life's official response:

At this time, we have no indication that the storm will impact our ability to be open on Monday, and to hold classes as usual. If classes are cancelled, a notice will be placed on the college website and a community-wide email will be sent no later than 6AM; in addition, a message will be sent through the RAVE system.

Hey Meghan- I think you'll be fine with the microwave you have. It's really not a big deal, just make sure it's not something that is too heavy duty. If it is over let's say 2000 watts, then definitely exchange it.

Usually, what most freshmen will bring is a portable plug in teapot to boil water- it is a terrific investment and very helpful for when you want to make anything that requires boiled water :)

ahh confusion! on the facebook page it was mentioned about having to accept pending financial aid on knightvision in order for it to finalize, but i've never heard of this outside of facebook... is there any truth to this/is this something i need to do?

Oh no worries, it's going to be okay!! First, did you get a letter in the mail about scholarships/ financial aid you received when you were accepted from SMC? If you did, circled the "Accepted" box, and sent it back to Financial Aid, then you're all set!! If you haven't done this or didn't get this letter, sign into Knight Vision (log in usually first letter of last name, followed by ID number). Click "Student" and then in the right hand corner click "Financial aid by year." Listed should be all of your scholarships/ financial aid and if you have accepted it. If it says, "Pending," then go back and click "Accept or Reject Financial Aid Awards." Then, just accept your scholarships and you should be all set. If you want to triple check, then definitely feel free to call Financial Aid at 802.654.3243. Good luck :)

Yes, definitely recommend a fan!! Vermont, while it may be cool from November to April, is really warm the first weeks of school. Since the dorms don't have air conditioning, it is the best idea to talk to your roommate about one of you bringing a room fan. My roommate, Bri, and I had our fan all year as well and used it when our room became a little stuffy as well. Overall, terrific investment and idea :)

To tell you the truth, I've never seen anyone bring in an audio recorder. Usually, professors are really good about posting their powerpoint presentations or a summary of their notes on ecollege, so if I missed something in class, I always just print those out afterwards :)

Yes, you do need a cable to connect your TV to your cable jack. I definitely would recommend an ethernet cable- while wireless is really good in the dorms, in case of emergency, like the network goes down or is being fixed, you always have access to the internet. You actually have to buy both cables, which are available at the campus bookstore :)

Happy Monday Everyone!!

First of all, I just want to start off by saying how much I love talking to the Class of 2015 on Facebook. Being able to help you guys out, give advice, or just a friendly word has been an amazing experience for me, not only as a blogger, but as an upperclassmen. I cannot wait to meet you all and most of all, can't wait for you to be at SMC!!

Today, I want to talk about what a lot of you may be experiencing, especially this week, since next Thursday, you'll all be at One Winooski Park starting your college experience. Today, it's all about the worries of getting adjusted to college and the worry of homesickness.

My wonderful readers know that while I'm really bubbly, friendly, and love SMC, I can also be a nervous wreck and shy sometimes when it comes to new things, even with a place that I love.

I'm going to take you back to August 2010, when I was an incoming first year. I was utterly excited. Things like buying new bedding, picking new clothes, and even getting my bright pink laundry bin brought a smile to my face. It wasn't really because I was getting those things (even though I do love shopping :) that made me the most excited though- it was the fact that I knew I was going to the place that I was meant to be. The place I was going to spend my next four years learning new subjects, meeting great new people, being a part of great new clubs, exploring new places, going to Alliot in my pajamas, but most of all- finding myself, as a student, a friend, and a leader.

I was definitely counting down the days until SMC!!

It was weird though- I think for every bit of excitement I felt, I still felt nervous. From things such as, "Will I adjust okay to my classes? Do Professors teach a lot differently from high school teachers? Will I be able to handle my course load and have enough study time?" to things such as, "I'm going to miss my friends so much, this has been such a great summer, am I ready for it to end? I'm going to miss my home- from my mom's home cooking to being able to snuggle with my pets after a long day or being able to hug my parents and have them tell me it's going to be okay."

I don't know if I'm ready to say goodbye to what I know...

I was totally a bunch of mixed emotions that I really didn't know how to deal with. To tell you the honest truth, I set off for Vermont at 1am on August 26th crying- I couldn't even tell if they were tears of excitement or tears of sadness. I think they were a mix of both.

When I arrived at SMC after 7 hours of driving, I was greeted with a bunch of excited cheers, whistles, and "Honk if you love SMC!!!!!" signs. I was helped by the sweetest O-Leaders with everything from bringing up all of my things to helping me on where to go. Had my RA, floormates, and upperclassmen knocking at my door to welcome me to SMC. Played icebreakers with my O-Group, who were all really terrific.

I was really enjoying myself!!

My first day of classes was amazing- my floormate (and now best friend) Taylor was in Gen Psych and we sat together, which made me feel so much better. My adviser, Ari, taught my Gen Psych class, and we got to draw pictures and talk about what we wanted to get out of Psychology. In my Spanish class, we played "Simon Says" en espanol, and in my Peace and Justice FYS, my professor knew my name by the end of the class, discussed world events, and I met two of my best friends, Mary and Abbey. It was awesome!!

Does that mean I didn't get homesick? Does that mean I still wasn't intimidated by college work?

Absolutely not!!

What's so important for first year's to know is that it is okay to feel this way. You're in a new place and meeting new people. You are definitely not alone in feeling this way.

If you need to call home- do it. If you need to run around campus to get out nervous energy- do it.

The thing is that you can't let it get the best of you and don't let it hold you back. College is a whole new world and you are a part of it. So, get involved with things on campus, keep your door open and talk to floormates about getting together for dinner or a movie night, don't hesitate to participate in discussions or study groups, and open yourself up to new possibilities. I can guarantee it will work and you will realize just how amazing SMC really is :)

Also, remember that you will be surrounded with people who are here to help you get adjusted. From upperclassmen, professors, counselors, directors of activities you want to be involved in and RA's to even the lovely motherly Knight Stand ladies who help you out with your Knight Card (another Alex moment I'll let you all in on another day :) we are here to help.

I wish you all sooooooo much luck x100. I know you will all be an amazing new addition to the SMC family!! I'll actually be around at orientation, so if you see me, please don't hesitate to stop by and say hello or like I promised, get a free hug :)

It actually depends on what loft company you use and if you reserve it online or not.

It's not a weird question at all, no worries!! Okay, you should have:
- a couple of pairs of sandals/ flip flops (1 set aside as shower shoes)
- a nice set of dress shoes
-rain boots
-sneakers or running shoes for working out
-if you're a girl, I love my Uggs and flats
-if you're a guy, I know a lot of my guy friends like loafers or Sperry's.
- snow boots

A lot of people also put their TV on their desk, dresser, or even refrigerator to save space. However, even those people who brought special stands for their TV had enough room for them. In my opinion, it's definitely more about how you place things in your room to make most of the space you have :)

Yes, there are dressers in the dorms- usually they either have 6 or 3 draws and have a nice amount of space. For storage, definitely under the bed bins which you can get at any Target or Walmart- they don't take up much space in your dorm and are really handy for storing things such as extra clothes or sheets and towels :)

Hi! If I need to order books for one class through the SMC bookstore (a package deal for a language class) but want to order my other books elsewhere, will I be able to order books through SMC for ONLY that one class? Or do I have to go in all or nothing?

Yes!! If you want to just put in for that one Language order, you can do it- just put in the class number (ex. SP102A) into the "Class 1" space on the bookstores buying form and leave all the other class spaces blank, place the order, and you're good to go :)

Is it weird living in NYC and then going to college in Vermont?

I wouldn't say weird, I would probably say different in a really good way. I grew up going to things such as the openings of the Christmas displays on Fifth Avenue, going to Broadway plays, adventuring around Times Square, seeing the tree in Rockefeller Center, and going to my favorite waffle and hot chocolate stand in Bryant Park (my favorite place in NYC :) I've love having the opportunity to live in such an amazing place. However, I absolutely love Vermont as well. I love the calmness and true beauty of it all. I love going to Church Street and visiting the boutiques and shops. I love going to the Skinny Pancake and the sun reflect on Lake Champlain or having Bueno y Sano (my most favorite place in Burlington) and catching a movie with friends. Plus, SMC is my second home, so I love Vermont mainly because of that. College is really the chance to explore what you love and what will help you grow into the person you want to be- having the chance to live in two amazing, but different places has allowed me that, so I'm pretty lucky that way :)

What kind words- thank you so much!! With dorm windows, it's a bit tricky, unfortunately. While all the dorm windows provide a great view, are pretty big, and are provided blinds, window measurements really depend on the building you're in and the floor you're on. My advice would be to buy curtains after you've settled in or even bring a tape measure with you on move-in day so that way, you can get the exact measurements for your personal window. In my experience, since there is a lot of down time on move-in day before orientation events begin, what I did was took my measurements down (well, actually my Dad did ;) and headed out to buy them that day. There are so many places around SMC to buy really nice curtains- whether it be at the UMall (Exit 14E, I-89), Church Street Marketplace (Exit 14W, I-89 ), or in Williston (Exit 12 I-89) at places such as Walmart or Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Don't be worried!! First, I would definitely send a follow up message to the professor, asking if he or she received your previous email and restate your interest in knowing the book list for the fall term. I would also keep checking the Bookstore's website to see if it has been posted yet as well. A lot of professors are even good about giving a couple of days to students to pick up books once classes start. Good luck :)

Yes, there is an overhead light, but to tell you the truth, I personally never enjoyed having it on because it was very bright. I usually preferred having my desk light and my roommates desk light on, because they brightened up the room softly and just as well :)

How is the fitness center at SMC?

I personally think it's great. Located in the Tarrant part of Ross Sports Center (upstairs), the fitness center of course includes a cardio room and a weight room, plus an indoor track. There are also studios available if you enjoy dance. Every week, programs such as Zumba, Yoga, and open pool night are offered as well. Downstairs, you have the intramural gym and some raquetball/ squash rooms and also the climbing wall :)

Well, I'm a lector and a Eucharistic Minister at the 7pm Sunday mass, I've attended some retreats, and I'm looking forward to becoming a member of the VITA (campus ministry here at SMC) vision team and group leader in our large prayer group, LINK, which meets weekly. We have so many programs within VITA, such as the Dessert and the Divine, where we have delicious baked goods and catch up, the Emmaus and Leap retreats which are every semester and very popular, or even just being a part of the mass through liturgical choir or alter serving. Most likely, you will be placed in the class that you tested into for the online part of the exam. However, I think just to be safe, wait until you take the second part of the exam that Friday during orientation and see how you do before you buy any books. When you do find out where you've been placed, buy the books and definitely talk to your Spanish professor, making him or her aware of your situation :)

My roommate, Bri and I actually decided on a beach theme for our room, so we had sea shells, posters of the ocean, and quotes about the beach scattered around the room. The number one thing you definitely need to do is make your dorm your own, so if you and your roommate talk about and agree on a certain theme, than I think it's is a great way to do that :)

Well, last year, we had the VITA Snowflake Semiformal right before we all left for winter break, which was so much fun!! We all got dressed up and went to Pomerleau, which is right across the street. We all had a wonderful time having great conversations with friends, sipping sparkling cider, using the chocolate fountain, and dancing the night away!! It was such a success and hopefully, we'll have it again this year :)

Personally, I think it's good. In Alliot, there is a lot of variety offered every day- from specials to our usual grill, international (where they usually have some type of stir fry), our vegan/ vegetarian option, pasta bar, pizza, soup, salad bar, and of course, dessert bar. You also have the other Knight Card swipe option of going to Sloane on North Campus, which houses Knights at the Round Table, SMC's little restaurant, where you make reservations, get to choose from different options from the menu, and get served which is pretty cool and delicious as well. The Knight Stand, which costs money, is always great too- serving wraps, salads, and sandwiches. Overall, you'll always find something that you like :)

Could you explain more about the dorm space (recommendations as far as lofting-1/2 or full,- storage, etc. Is there a difference between buildings... I'm in Ryan for instance... College shopping is well under way and I was wondering what works best :)

Absolutely I could!!
Lofting: You're right, you do have the options of a half or full loft from the lofting companies that SMC uses. Personally, either or is good for storage. Full is great if you feel like putting a futon or I even know some people who put their desk underneath the bed. Half is also reasonable because you can sometimes have things such as your refrigerator and microwave underneath. Either way you'll have plenty of space. I would definitely check out the lofting companies to see the height which you feel most comfortable with and even on move-in day they'll be in the quad setting up if you want to check them out in person. Storage: Under the bed storage is the best freshman year. Whether you use the long thin storage boxes (http://www.target.com/Iris-Underbed-Boxes-Clear-qt/dp/B000CEE2X0/ref=sc_qi_detaillink) or the tubby medium sized boxes (http://www.target.com/Sterilite-Storage-Box-Set-Black/dp/B004W8F420/ref=sc_qi_detaillink), they are must haves and the best investments in college!! They save space and having them under your bed is terrific too because it doesn't interfere with your roommates space either. For closets, I would recommend some cascade hangers, so that you can cut down on the amount of space you use for things such as clothes and shoes and you'll have plenty of room. Now in Ryan, since you have real closets and not the armoire/cubby closets that Joyce and Lyons have, I probably wouldn't go with hanging racks for shoes and thing inside the closet, but maybe one for outside of it that you could hang.

No worries!! Each wing has it's own RA. Even on the single sex floors, you have 2 RA's who are either both girls for the girls floor or both guys for the guys floor. So, if you're living on a single sex wing, and you're a girl, you have a girl RA and if you're a guy you have a guy RA :)

Could you explain the dorms wing/ floor thing to me and how to not get lost?

Sure I can :) Okay, so each dorm (Ryan, Lyons, and Joyce) is divided into north and south wings. However, in Ryan and Joyce, you are separated into single sex wings, where as in Lyons, you are separated into single sex floors.
So, what this means is:
-When you enter through the main stairway, each floor you go on will have a left (north) and right (south) door, leading you to that wing of the floor.
-So, let's say in Joyce, when you reach the 4th floor, you have the choice of turning left (north) for the guys side or right (south) for the girls side.
-In Lyons though, since it's separated into single sex floors, you'll have both north and south wings of the same sex. Last year, it was 1st and 2nd floors boys and 3rd and 4th floors girls.

While this sounds like a lot, you'll find your way pretty quickly and be a pro at dorm living before you know it- good luck!!

Aww absolutely I did!! I'm constantly texting or Facebooking many of my floormates to see how they're doing and how excited I am to see them again in the fall!! I have to say, I was so super nervous about this too. However, many of my floormates became some of my closest friends :) While I can probably name majority of my floor and say the terrific relationship I share with each of them, I'm going to let you know that your floor truly does become your second family. Whether it be going to each others rooms to hang out, do homework, stop by if their free for dinner, or even brushing your teeth together, you WILL make lasting relationships with the people on your floor. Remember, just be yourself, socialize and keep your door open for people to drop by, and you will quickly be on your way to meeting some great friends :)

Okay!! Ryan has actual closets, while Lyons and Joyce have I guess what you would call armoire looking closets with a cubby on top for storage. Closet size is terrific in ALL dorms and you also get a good sized dresser, which is terrific as well- you'll have a great deal of space for everything :)

Hi! If I need to order books for one class through the SMC bookstore (a package deal for a language class) but want to order my other books elsewhere, will I be able to order books through SMC for ONLY that one class? Or do I have to go in all or nothing?
